AMD reported its highest quarterly revenue ever and expects fourth-quarter revenue of approximately $17 billion. Tom's Hardware reports that this would put AMD ahead of Intel for the first time in history.

Third-quarter revenue climbs sharply

AMD posted third-quarter revenue of $13.377 billion, against $9.25 billion in the same quarter a year earlier and $11.54 billion in the quarter before. The company published the figures late on Tuesday.

Data center demand carries the results

Demand for Epyc data center processors and Instinct AI accelerators nearly doubled compared with a year earlier. Sales of products for client systems declined only modestly, despite high memory prices and other headwinds.

Gains in data center hardware more than offset the softer client business, and AMD's profitability continued to improve as a result.

Fourth-quarter forecast and the Intel comparison

The most striking element of the update is AMD's expectation of roughly $17 billion in fourth-quarter revenue. According to Tom's Hardware, that level would place AMD ahead of Intel for the first time in history.

Intel is a semiconductor and electrical company based in Santa Clara, while AMD is based in Sunnyvale. The Intel comparison comes from the reporting outlet, not from figures in the company update itself.
