Apple has released HomePod 27.2 software for the HomePod and HomePod mini, introducing a light effect called Sound Glow that responds to playback. According to MacRumors, the update also adds several new options to Apple's speakers.

How Sound Glow behaves

Sound Glow makes the top surface of a HomePod or HomePod mini light up with colour that pulses in step with the music being played. The shades are taken from album artwork, and the effect works across songs, podcasts and Apple's ambient music feature.

The effect is also extended to the HomePod mini and second-generation HomePod already in use. The feature is additionally listed for the HomePod mini 2, which is still upcoming.

Further additions in the release

A new Lock Controls option turns off touch interaction on the top of the HomePod, and a touch panel lock is included as well. The software also allows a HomePod to be set as the default speaker for a Mac, with Mac audio delivered through AirPlay.

Surround sound using four HomePods or HomePod mini 2 speakers is supported for the new Apple TV, but that arrangement needs new hardware.
