Scientists at The University of Queensland have developed a technology that lets them watch disease-related proteins behave inside living neurons, and it is to be applied to early drug discovery for neurodegenerative diseases, according to Phys.org.

What the NASTIC platform does

The technology is called NASTIC, short for Nanoscale Spatiotemporal Indexing Clustering. It allows researchers to study biological processes in living cells in real time, across both space and time.

According to the report, NASTIC operates at the single-molecule level and does so for the first time.

Spin-out into Accretion Bio

The platform has been spun out into Accretion Bio, a startup based in Brisbane, which is to take it forward into early drug discovery work.

Open questions

  • Which drug candidates or disease targets will Accretion Bio pursue first?
  • When are results from using the platform in drug discovery expected?
