Google has added an audio recorder to Gemini Notebook on Android and iOS, a week after introducing Connected App integration. The feature is intended to let users capture lectures and record their thoughts while on the go.

How the recorder is started and saved

The recorder can be launched from the Gemini Notebook homepage, in which case the audio file creates a new notebook. Tapping the microphone in the Sources tab of an existing notebook saves the recording to that notebook instead. The interface is deliberately plain, with a pause button and a checkmark that starts the upload once a recording is finished. A waveform styled in Gemini Notebook's colours and a live count appear above the controls.

According to the report, recordings keep running if the user switches to another application or locks the screen.

Related change and reported shortcomings

In the same week, Google made a small change: tapping the Create New button now starts a new notebook directly, rather than sliding up the Add a source panel. The report describes the recorder as close to useless when the device is offline, unlike the Pixel Recorder app, and says file deletion currently appears to be broken.

The report says the feature seems to be broadly available rather than limited to the US. 9to5Google is the only outlet cited for these details.

Open questions

  • Will offline recording and file deletion be fixed in a later update?

Key facts

  • Google first announced the audio recorder in September and is now rolling it out widely on Android and iOS.
