Hacker Roots 2018 Echo Dot 3 to Free It From Amazon Cloud

A maker known as Andy has rooted a 2018 Amazon Echo Dot 3, Hackaday reports, loosening the device from Amazon's cloud and turning it into a local Home Assistant voice satellite.
Soldering a USB connector to the board
The first step is gaining USB access to the circuit board inside the device. Because the Dot has no USB port, that means opening the casing and soldering a USB connector onto test pads on the printed circuit board.
The Echo Dot is one of Amazon's smart speakers, built around the Alexa voice assistant and tied into Amazon's AWS cloud services. It is a deliberately minimal device, which is why Hackaday notes that many owners may prefer to detach it from that cloud.
Running a local voice assistant
Once rooted, the device can be turned into a Home Assistant voice satellite using a project created by Julian Imhof, whose code was largely produced with the help of Claude. Andy notes that the code appears to work but has not been audited, so readers should proceed with caution.
The project supports only certain Echo Dot and Echo Show models, listed on its project page. Other Echo devices can use the existing USB port, which simplifies the first step.
The devices run Fire OS, a version of Android. The process therefore involves unlocking the bootloader and installing the hassmic application, which replaces Alexa.
