What happened

Anthropic said on October 18, 2026 that it is committing a portion of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity designed so that its stake grows as the company grows. Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic's shares will be committed, with an additional 2% added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline, according to the company's announcement. Anthropic is an artificial intelligence company based in San Francisco.

Under the announced terms, no Anthropic equity held by the LLC will go toward lobbying or political giving anywhere in the United States or abroad, the company said.

Because of how the fund is structured, the more Anthropic grows, the larger the share of the company that can be dedicated expressly to the public good, the announcement said. Anthropic contrasted the approach with pay practices elsewhere in the technology industry, stating that companies commonly grant executives escalating compensation awards and that it is instead routing that equity to the public benefit.

LLC Structure and Giving Restrictions Anthropic is establishing the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund as a wholly-owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or another format, a structure the company said gives it adjustability between different forms of giving. The company said the fund’s flexibility and scale will let it pursue its mission in new ways, naming as possibilities large donations to traditional nonprofits and distributing funds directly to specific populations.
