OpenAI has announced general availability of an outbound telephony API for GPT-Live, allowing developers to have voice agents dial real phone numbers. The report, published by Crypto Briefing, describes calls that run over SIP trunk providers to the public telephone network.

How the outbound calls are routed

The core feature is outbound calling over SIP, the Session Initiation Protocol. Crypto Briefing describes SIP as the mechanism that sets up, manages and ends internet-based phone calls, and says developers do not have to build that layer themselves.

Developers connect GPT-Live to a SIP trunk provider, which links to the traditional telephone network. According to the report, the external provider handles termination onto the public switched telephone network, while OpenAI keeps control of audio processing and session logic on its side of the connection.

Named providers and voice features

The report names Telnyx and Twilio as launch partners and says Ozonetel has also been confirmed as a supported provider.

Two technical additions are highlighted: support for HD Voice, which provides wideband, higher-fidelity audio on calls, and full bidirectional DTMF signalling, meaning an agent can both send and receive the tones produced when a keypad number is pressed. The report says calls can run with both sides talking and listening at once.

Background to the launch

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence company based in San Francisco. The report notes that GPT-Live-1 launched globally in ChatGPT on July 8, 2026, and presents the telephony API as a further step for the same voice technology.

The story rests on a single outlet's report. The headline price of $0.05 per minute is taken from the reported headline and is not confirmed by the other verified facts.

Open questions

  • Will the $0.05 per minute price apply to all calls through every named provider?
  • How do the named providers' own charges add to the cost for developers?
