Polygon faces a proposal to recover 70.49 million POL tokens stolen in the Binance and Polymarket hacks by means of a hard fork. The idea is to put the funds back in the hands of their owners, and governance discussions are scheduled for November.

Stolen tokens already frozen

Polygon block producers have already frozen the stolen tokens. The proposed hard fork would go a step further, allowing the funds to be recovered and returned to their owners.

The proposal concerns POL tokens taken in the Binance and Polymarket hacks. Binance is a cryptocurrency exchange and finance company based in the United Arab Emirates and founded in 2017.

Questions for blockchain immutability

A hard fork of this kind challenges the principle that blockchain records cannot be altered. According to the report, the proposal could influence future governance decisions and the trust placed in decentralised systems.

Open questions

  • Will the governance discussions set for November lead to a hard fork?
  • How would returning the funds affect blockchain immutability norms?
