Snapshot Europe releases largest open wildlife camera dataset to date
A volunteer-driven project called Snapshot Europe has published what it describes as the largest open-access survey of mammals and birds across an entire continent, according to a report by Phys.org.
How the survey is collected
Each autumn for the past five years, hundreds of volunteers have placed remotely triggered cameras in mountains, forests, farms and beaches. The work spans more than 20 countries in Europe.
The project, which goes by the name Snapshot Europe, makes its data openly accessible to researchers and the public.
Scope of the dataset
Phys.org reports that the collection covers mammals and birds across a whole continent, which it presents as the largest dataset of its kind to be released openly. The report rests on the project's own description of its scale and has not been independently checked against the underlying data.
Open questions
- How many images or observations the released dataset contains?
- Which species are most represented in the collection?
