According to a report by Android Authority, seven apps still look poor on foldable phones, and the author argues that Google should call them out first. The problem is that many developers have not adapted their software to the larger folding screens.

Google's push for optimised foldable apps

Google released Android 12L to offer a better software experience on foldables. Alongside that update, the company has been encouraging developers to publish versions of their apps that are optimised for these devices.

The report says the effort has not yet reached a number of apps, which still look poor on foldable hardware.

Apple's iPhone Duo raises the same question

Apple has just released the iPhone Duo, and the report notes that many developers have not optimised their apps for its form factor. Developers are gradually adapting to the iPhone Duo, according to the report, but the same app makers have not yet adapted to Android foldables.

The gap is therefore presented as a contrast: attention to the new Apple device is growing, while Android foldable support lags behind.

Open questions

  • Will Google publicly name the seven apps the report identifies?
  • How quickly will developers update their apps for foldable screens?
