Google extends Gemini's Personal Intelligence to cars, starting with Android Auto

Google has started rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto and on Android Automotive, the system for cars with Google built in. The feature lets the assistant draw on a driver's Google services, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps and YouTube, to tailor its answers while the car is in use.
What the feature does behind the wheel
Gemini already handles spoken requests for navigation, vehicle controls and music recommendations. Personal Intelligence adds information from the Google account, so answers can reflect a driver's own circumstances. Google's examples include checking a flight delay without first searching for the confirmation email, and getting directions to a saved place in Google Maps without looking up its street address.
Preferences such as a vegetarian diet can also be drawn on, so a driver does not have to repeat them with every command. Reporters describe the change as turning the assistant into something closer to a co-pilot that already knows the day's schedule.
Opt-in and privacy controls
Personal Intelligence is optional. Users who already enabled it for the Gemini app on their phone will have it carried over to Android Auto automatically. Users can switch it off at any point and decide which apps Gemini may access.
Without the feature, the car's core functions keep working: navigation, music, calls and questions still function, but the answers are not personalised. On Android Automotive, personalised responses are shared only when the car is connected to the driver's phone.
Wider rollout and industry context
Google introduced Gemini for vehicles on April 30, 2026, starting with English support in the US. The company says Personal Intelligence will reach cars with Google built in over the coming months. The feature first arrived earlier in the year in the Gemini chatbot, drawing on other Google apps, and was later extended to free accounts after being limited to paid Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
The announcement came alongside news that Gemini is coming to General Motors vehicles, an estimated 4 million cars dating from 2022 onward, with updates beginning in 2026. The covered brands are Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. On October 16, 2026, Geely Holding announced a partnership with Google aimed mainly at overseas markets, with a rollout set to begin in the second half of 2027 in markets outside China and the US. On October 19, 2026, Google pushed updates that deepened Gemini's integration with Android Auto.
