Jack Dorsey warns Bitcoin fails if reduced to digital gold
What happened
Dorsey's stance highlights the critical need for Bitcoin's evolution into a widely-used transactional currency to fulfill its original vision.
Jack Dorsey has a blunt message for anyone treating Bitcoin like a digital bar of bullion: that outcome counts as failure. CEO said that if Bitcoin ends up serving only as digital gold, rather than money people use for everyday purchases, the project will have missed its point.
What Dorsey said The remarks spread through video clips and posts that circulated between October 17 and October 19, 2026. The central line came on October 18, 2026, and it left little room for interpretation.
“If Bitcoin ends up just being digital gold, it is a failed project.” Dorsey’s argument is that Bitcoin’s success depends on broad use as a medium for payments and daily transactions.
The October comments echo remarks he made on a podcast in April 2025, and they track with a line of thinking he has pushed for years. That line of thinking points straight back to the source code of the whole idea.
Satoshi Nakamoto’s original whitepaper described Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer (machines connecting directly to each other, with no server in between) electronic cash system. “Cash” is the operative word, and Dorsey has consistently leaned on it.
