What happened

Epic Games announced today that its biggest game, Fortnite, is officially coming to Linux, bringing joy to millions of Linux gamers who will no longer have to deal with translation layers and compatibility issues on their own. While the game is not available yet, the company is currently rebuilding Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and plans to distribute Fortnite through its new Epic Games Launcher once the security work is complete. Epic Games is a video game company based in North Carolina.

Historically, anti-cheat compatibility has been a barrier, as EAC has supported Linux for years, but developers needed to enable that support. Epic states that its existing implementation cannot offer protection comparable to Windows, and Fortnite players have been in the dark, replying on limited success with Proton translation layer.

The new version, EAC Linux v2, aims to address Windows-Linux security gab by utilizing built-in Linux security features instead of a dedicated anti-cheat kernel driver. IOMMU support will also be necessary for non-handheld systems.
