Vantage settles loan payment in tokenized deposits on Ethereum mainnet
Vantage Bank and Rio Bank have settled a loan payment using tokenized deposits on the Ethereum mainnet, according to Crypto Briefing. The transaction, dated October 19, 2026, was presented as the first interbank loan participation or syndication principal-and-interest payment of its kind.
How the payment was routed
In a loan participation, a lead bank extends a loan and sells shares of it to other banks, so once the borrower pays, the lead bank must hand each participant its portion of principal and interest. In this case two pieces of infrastructure carried the payment: Participate's loan-sales platform, which matches banks buying and selling loan interests, and the Hazel Network, which Vantage Bank built together with Custodia Bank.
Participate reports that principal and interest landed in the receiving bank's digital wallet within three minutes, with loan balances and payment notices updated at the same moment. The settlement took place on the public Ethereum mainnet rather than a private test chain. Custodia's Avit token, an ERC-20 asset, was part of the setup.
Testing that preceded the live transfer
Vantage and Custodia have been testing tokenized deposits since March 2025, so the live payment followed roughly a year and a half of trial work. The most recent phase began in April 2026.
Matt Johnner of Participate described the payment as a practical demonstration of tokenized deposits fitting into workflows banks already run, and called it a key step toward automating interbank loan servicing.
What remains unverified
The account comes from a single outlet, Crypto Briefing, and relies heavily on Participate's description of speed and process. The first-of-its-kind framing comes from the parties involved and has not been independently confirmed.
Open questions
- Will the arrangement extend to further loan participations beyond this payment?
- Can the sub-three-minute settlement time be independently verified?
