According to a report from The Defiant, bitcoin tied to the Binance hack has remained unspent across 19 addresses. A separate account still holds 233.46 million XRP, and investigators can follow the funds but cannot freeze either asset because no issuer holds that control.

Funds remain in place across accounts

The Defiant reports that the stolen bitcoin has not moved and is spread across 19 addresses. The outlet's account describes the holdings as unspent, which keeps them visible on the public ledger for investigators to trace.

XRP balance and the freeze question

A further 233.46 million XRP remains in one account. Unlike a centrally issued token, neither the bitcoin nor the XRP can be frozen by an issuer, so investigators have a trail to follow but no built-in way to stop the assets from being moved.

Binance, the cryptocurrency exchange and finance company that was founded in 2017 and is based in the United Arab Emirates, is the platform at the centre of the incident described in the report.

Open questions

  • Will the 19 bitcoin addresses remain unspent over time?
  • Is there a route, outside issuer controls, by which the XRP could be recovered?
