San Francisco-based Anthropic has been revealed as a long-term leaseholder of a large data centre project in Point Tupper, NS, according to BetaKit. If confirmed in full, it would be the AI company's first data centre in Canada.

Project scope and phased timeline

Halifax-based EverWind Fuels announced plans on Friday for a $10-billion data centre project at its existing campus in Point Tupper, NS. Of that investment, more than $8 billion is earmarked to develop the campus, and $2 billion is allocated to its onshore wind energy portfolio.

The campus is planned to open with a 95-megawatt (MW) phase in late 2027, followed by a 325 MW expansion slated for 2028. At full development, the campus would provide 420 MW of compute capacity.

Anthropic's role and Canadian customers

EverWind did not initially name the project's first long-term leaseholder. Anthropic later told media that the facility will power its Claude models and help meet growing demand from customers in Canada and around the world.

Both Anthropic and EverWind have signed onto Canada's Responsible Data Centre Development Principles. The framework is voluntary and not enforceable; it offers hyperscalers and regulators guidance on weighing factors such as electricity and water use when planning data centres.

Open questions
