What happened

ams OSRAM has joined the Short-Reach Micro-Emitter Optics (SRMO) workstream within the Open Compute Project (OCP), as the industry looks to develop faster, more energy-efficient optical interconnects for AI data centers (a building full of computers that runs online services). Led by Credo, the initiative brings together hyperscalers and optical technology suppliers to establish interoperable standards for next-generation AI infrastructure.

The move is significant for European photonics and semiconductor suppliers as growing GPU (a chip built for many calculations at once, used for graphics and AI) clusters drive demand for alternatives to conventional copper interconnects. For eeNews Europe readers, the initiative highlights emerging opportunities in microLEDs, VCSELs and advanced optical packaging, with a common specification targeted for OCP approval in 2027.
