French AI company Mistral has announced its new open-weight AI model Mistral Large 4 (ML4), which it said “significantly outperforms” any open-weight model developed in the US or Europe. ML4, which launched yesterday (6 October) in a public preview, was trained on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in the company’s own data centres in Europe and a “significant share” of the model’s training data was multilingual, spanning more than 160 languages, including every official language of the EU.

Known as ‘Le Chonk’, ML4 is a 1trn-parameter natively multimodal model with 49bn active parameters, and Mistral’s “largest and most capable model to date”. The company stated in a blogpost that the model’s high score on these tests reflected a “practical advantage”.
