What happened

Three years after first launching the tool, Google is now making its generative AI detector available to the public globally, as content created from the technology becomes increasingly harder to discern by humans. Google has, to date, watermarked more than 180bn images and videos, it said. Google is an Internet and software company based in Mountain View, and its products and services include Google Search and Software tools.

Google has, to date, watermarked more than 180bn images and videos, along with 240,000 years’ worth of audio content, it said.

That number stood at around 10bn a year ago in May. Users can now use the SynthID detector to identity certain types of AI-generated content created from Google and its AI partners, including OpenAI and Nvidia.

They can similarly check AI content from Apple’s tools soon, the company said. Users will be able to utilise the tool alongside Google’s other built-in verification features in Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome, it said.
