What happened

The latest modernization effort has delivered two new locomotives and a specialized track-maintenance vehicle to three installations. The US Army is replacing aging locomotives and specialized rail equipment used to move military supplies with new deliveries designed around the unusual constraints of ammunition depots and military installations.

The Army’s Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) says more than one-third of its active locomotives have exceeded their expected useful life of 65 years. Its immediate goal is to reduce that proportion to below 20 percent, cutting maintenance costs and improving the movement of military equipment.

The service says the locomotives are the first major additions to the Army’s rail fleet in more than a decade. Why military railways need specialized equipment Railways remain an important part of military logistics, allowing the Army to move heavy equipment and supplies between installations, storage depots, and transportation hubs.
