What happened

A US aerospace and defense company has recently launched 21 satellites into low Earth orbit (the band of space closest to Earth, where most satellites fly), in a bid to help the military detect missiles and communicate securely during missions. The satellites were deployed on October 10, 2026, aboard a SpaceX rocket for the US Space Development Agency (SDA).

It aims to detect and track missile threats, and allow military forces to exchange critical information around the world with almost no delay. They are the first Northrop Grumman-built satellites for the agency’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer (T1TL).

The project is part of a larger military satellite network known as the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA). Lou Christen, Northrop Grumman senior director of proliferated systems, praised the milestone.
