What happened

The payload (what a rocket is carrying) fairing containing 40 Amazon Leo satellites arrives at United Launch Alliance’s new Vertical Integration Facility-A for attachment to a Vulcan rocket. This mission, carrying 40 satellites for Amazon’s Leo internet service, will be the fifth flight of Vulcan since it debuted in 2024 and will be the first time it has been fitted with six strap-on solid rocket boosters.

United Launch Alliance announced Wednesday it plans to return its Vulcan rocket to service on November 13, nine months after a solid rocket booster anomaly threw the company's 2026 launch schedule into oblivion. The return-to-flight mission will launch 40 satellites for the Amazon Leo broadband constellation, the first of 38 Vulcan flights Amazon has booked to deploy the bulk of its network.

Untied Launch Alliance announces mid-November return to flight for Vulcan rocket October 28, 2026 Will Robinson-Smith United Launch Alliance said its fledgling Vulcan rocket would return to flight Friday, November 13, after a nine-month grounding due problems with its solid rocket boosters. The anticipated launch will be the first for the heavy-lift rocket since a mid-flight nozzle failure on a solid rocket booster.

It was nozzle failures on the Northrop Grumman-built solid rockets that put Vulcan flights on hold earlier this year.

The rocket’s second flight was marred by the disintegration of a nozzle on one of the two 63XL Graphite Epoxy Motors. This Vulcan launch will be the first to utilize a full complement of six solid rocket boosters.

United Launch Alliance thought it had put the problem behind it, but a similar nozzle failure afflicted one of the four boosters less than 30 seconds into Vulcan’s fourth flight in February 2026 on the USSF-87 mission.
